A Better City
From 17th March to the 16th July 2017 an exhibition was on display in the Bazel on Vijzelstraat in the centre of Amsterdam.
The exhibition “A Better City” looks at the different stages of Amsterdam’s development and the visions it had for a better future at each key moment.
The Amsterdam Extension Plan (Algemeen Uitbreidingsplan, AUP) started by Cornelis van Eesteren in the 1930’s was the beginning of the vision for an expanded Amsterdam in the twentieth century. In the exhibition you can visit four rooms containing exhibitions on the journey to a better city. The rooms cover the significant moments in the development of the extension plan: 1935, 1958, 2006 and 2017.
The exhibition combines photos, maps, film and radio fragments to tell the story of the different phases of the AUP.

To complement the exhibition the Van Eesteren Museum is running tours and debates about the city gardens in Amsterdam to show the results of the AUP.
