Conditional People

Conditional People is an exhibition installation by graphic designer Rasha Dakkak, living in Nieuw-West. The installation reflects the Amsterdam that Dakkak has come to know in recent years: a city that both welcomes and excludes. For Dakkak, this conditional acceptance is the starting point of her work. It's a familiar pain: her status as a second-class citizen emphasises her “otherness” time after time. In her installation, she uses a large number of specially designed dining plates to show how the 'other' intertwines, however, in the city's network. Conditional People asks the question: How long does it take for the “other” to become part of “us”?
The dinner plate is central to her installation, a modest cultural artifact where graphic patterns can express a certain identity. Dakkak's dinner plates show stories about heritage and belonging in layers, creating a delicate interaction between acceptance and otherness.
The opening of the exhibition is on Friday, December 13, at 6:00pm, come by!
