Guided Tour through Slotermeer, ENG.

Walk along through the neighbourhood of Slotermeer. In 1951, this garden city was the first to be built by Cornelis van Eesteren and his team. Slotermeer is part of the AUP, Amsterdam's 1935 General Expansion Plan, in which Van Eesteren envisioned what the city of the future should look like. The Western Garden Cities, now knows as Nieuw-West, were built after the Second World War. In 2008, this special part of Amsterdam was even named a protected cityscape by the municipality of Amsterdam.
What do those future ideals of the past mean today? During the walk, a tour guide explains how much attention, thought and idealism was given to this neighbourhood by its designers. We walk along the Sloterplas on the wide boulevard, past architect Piet Zanstra's high-rise flats, to the Burgemeester de Vlugtlaan and the prefab Airey houses. Hopefully, you'll view the highlight of modern urban planning in Amsterdam with different eyes.
