Toekomst van Toen in Slotervaart

Curious about how Amsterdam was built in the 1950s? Under the name “Toekomst van toen," the Van Eesteren Museum offers a series of guided walks.

Walk through the “future of the past” in Slotervaart, beautifully located along the Sloterpark and the southeast side of the Sloterplas. In this neighborhood, you will experience what living in light, air and space actually meant. After experimenting with allotments in Slotermeer and Geuzenveld, Slotervaart was built according to these ideal principles. Slotervaart is richly equipped with green houses, such as Jakoba Mulder's idea of the garden allotment. In the Colenbranderhof and the Bakhuizen van den Brinkhof, you will learn how the Sloterpark is intertwined with the buildings. And of course, you can see the various garden districts from Spoorwegbuurt to Blue Banddorp.

During the walk, you will also pass the national monument Het Sloterhof and experience the effects of the elevated Lelylaan. What was the role of the car in building the neighbourhood?

Compared to the previously designed neighbourhoods like Slotermeer or Geuzenveld and the later neighbourhood Buitenveldert, Slotervaart occupies a middle position, both in terms of the average size of the houses and the number of homes built by private construction. The comparison of these neighborhoods provides a good picture of the future of that time; the development of construction between 1950 and 1970.
